Pyjama Patrol

In keeping with the school theme of Love for the month of February, the Kingdom club will be hosting a Pyjama Drive for the Pyjama Patrol, a local charity run by a parent in our community. The drive will be run from February 6th until February 17th, and end with a pyjama day or all students! Please consider donating a new pair of pyjamas for a child who may not have a pair. We will also happily accept donations of money, blankets or new toiletries to assist those in need during this month. Thank you so much for your assistance! See the link below for more details!

Math Test Thursday

On Thursday, our morning class will be having a test to complete our geometry unit. Most of what students need to know is in the Hapara Workspace, which can be accessed from the student portal here. In class, we are working on a review and will be completing a unit problem as well.

The major topics in the unit were:

  1. measuring and drawing angles
  2. classifying shapes according to attributes (usually in a Venn Diagram)
  3. Construcitng shapes
  4. Identifying 3D shapes by their net
  5. Drawing 3D shapes using isometric dot paper

Please measure the angles if you have a protractor at home. If you don't, measure them when you get to school for bell work!

Science Quiz on Thursday!

On Thursday of this week, our afternoon class will be having a quiz which will cover much of what we have learned about electricity. Everything that students need to study for the quiz is in the Hapara Electricity Workspace, which can be accessed on the St. Anne website, through the "Student Portal".

Here is the link to the Blendspace unit as well, which will also help students to study. This Blendspace is also in the Workspace.

Math Homework for January 16, 2017

This week we are going to have a nightly math homework problem, just to try it out. Here is tonight's problem. It can be done on a regular sheet of paper (or grid paper, or print this)  and handed in tomorrow.

Report Writing

Before the holiday our class learned about writing reports using the correct format and structure. For assessment, students wrote a report about a topic of their choice. I marked these over the holiday and students were given their marks in Hapara. Please feel free to have your child show you their mark in Hapara and their written work. I tried to make as many comments as possible to assist them in understanding their mark. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

To further consolidate learning, we wrote a sample EQAO writing assessment last week, which focused on writing a report. Students were asked to write about the importance of being physically active. Today, we looked at the exemplars from EQAO for levels 1-4 and students self-assessed their work. Many were very good! Students who did not believe they had achieved level 4 were invited to try to improve it now that they had seen what it looked like. There wasn't a lot of time t make changes, but a few were made. I will mark these new reports so students can see how I would assess them.

In the meantime, here is a document that shows the question and an example of a level 1 through level 4 for this assignment. This will give a good indication of the level of writing that is expected at grade 6.

Thank you for your continued support this year. If you have any questions about your child's progress, please feel free to contact me any time.

Welcome Back to a New Year!

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and is looking forward to the New Year. We will be busy in Grade 6!

This, month, we will be focusing on geometry in math. We will be learning how to measure a variety of angles, classify figures and construct shapes to very specific measurements. Finally, we will be identifying shapes based on their nets and drawing 3D figures using isometric paper. Students generally find that constructing shapes is the most difficult part of this unit, so we will likely spend a fair amount of time practicing this skill.

In language and religion we will be learning about self-monitoring while we read and using fix-up strategies when we recognize that we are not understanding. See the presentation here for the strategies we learned in class. We will be writing a number of summaries to demonstrate that we are understanding our reading and writing journal entries as well. We will be beginning to learn about the sacrament of Confirmation and making preparations for our upcoming celebration in June.

In our afternoon class, we will be continuing to learn about electricity. We have learned about what electricity is, static and current electricity, and a variety of types of circuits. We will be learning about the different ways that electricity is generated and the environmental effects of each. Finally we will be building something that works by using electrical circuits.

If you have any questions about what is happening in class, please feel free to contact me at school. I am always happy to share your child's progress and explain about our program. I wish everyone a Happy New Year!
